About Bev Owens

I qualified as a secondary school teacher in 1976 specialising in Art, Drama and Special Needs.

I taught in London after University, in Hackney secondary Art up to A Level standard.

I moved back home to Manchester at the time when there was a ‘glut’ of teachers and few jobs despite government promises of the need for many more teachers. I did supply teaching across all phases of education and also taught ‘Night School’ (as it was then) in pottery and sculpture.

I also worked for The Department of Health and Social Security and continued to teach further education classes.

At about this time the government were offering free courses to ‘retrain’ and change career paths. I trained with a gents tailoring business in central Manchester as a tailoress and was employed by them following the completion of the training.

My three children were born. During this time I ran my own business for many years in tailoring and home furnishings.

As my children reached school age I undertook a year’s retraining at Manchester University to return to teaching in the Primary age range.

I have been teaching in Trafford since 1992 in Primary mainstream schools, and in special schools. I became Deputy Headteacher at Longford Park Special School and then subsequently became Headteacher of Longford Park Special School in 2003.

I gained a Diploma in Speech and Communication Difficulties from Manchester University in 1998.

I gained the National Professional Qualification for Headship in 2006.

I gained a Postgraduate Certificate in Art Therapy in 2011.

I am a trained Reiki practitioner.

I am a ‘Touch for Health’ (kinesiology) practitioner.

I have a qualification in Counselling.

I became Headteacher of Pictor Academy in Jan 2013.

I enjoy and thrive in being fully involved in the life of Pictor Academy and now of the whole Sovereign Academy Trust with Manor Academy.

Recently I was installed as President of the Trafford Branch of the National Association of Headteachers 2016-17
